Getting fired still sucks -even in 2025.
Remote, hybrid, on-site – none of it makes the blow feel softer.
And honestly? What makes it worse is when everyone around you sees it coming… except you.
As a recruiter, I’ve watched this play out from every angle – the employee, the manager, the HR partner, the replacement quietly interviewing behind the scenes.
So here it is – the real-talk version.
Not every sign = termination.
But if you’re seeing multiple signs at the same time?
You need to stop “hoping” and start paying attention.
1) Communication Shifts – Fast
Either your manager suddenly goes hyper-critical…
or they go dark and stop engaging.
Both can mean trouble.
In 2025, silence isn’t neutral.
“Unresponsive” is often code for: decision is being made somewhere else.
(Also: don’t forget – sometimes the boss is the one under fire. Watch the pattern, not a single moment.)
2) You Get Put on a PIP (Performance Improvement Plan)
There are two types of PIPs:
A) legit coaching + specific goals + support
B) legal paperwork to prepare separation
If it’s vague, unrealistic, or impossible to complete?
Yeah… you already know which one they handed you.
3) Everything Becomes “Documented”
Normal: email updates, recaps, follow-ups.
Concerning: HR starts showing up in CC.
Senior leadership suddenly looped in.
Unnecessary “paper trail” being created.
If your manager starts managing you “through Outlook” instead of human conversation – they’re building a file.
4) You’re Shut Out of Projects + Meetings
Projects disappear from your workload.
Invites stop showing up on your calendar.
Work is redistributed quietly to other people.
If you’re not part of future work – they’re already imagining a future without you.
5) Co-Workers Start Acting Weird
People go quiet.
Conversations shift when you walk in.
Energy gets awkward.
When the grapevine knows before you do?
It’s a sign leadership has already decided.
Now – here are the NEW 2025 signs everyone keeps ignoring:
6) AI Reassigns Your Work – and No One Pushes Back
If AI-automation starts absorbing big chunks of your tasks
and no one is fighting to keep you in the workflow?
That’s a red flag.
People defend talent they plan to keep.
7) Your Name Stops Appearing in Slack / Teams Decisions
You know the modern digital “cold shoulder”:
- group chats keep happening without you
- decisions are posted in channels you’re no longer in
- you get the final “FYI” instead of being included in the discussion
Exclusion in digital spaces is the new “org chart signal.”
8) You’re Removed From Systems / Permissions Quietly
GitHub access restricted.
Jira assignments transferred.
Asana tasks re-owned.
SharePoint folders disappearing.
Access loss = trust loss.
Final Thought
People know when something’s off.
Your gut isn’t random – it’s data.
Don’t freeze.
Don’t panic.
But don’t ignore the signs.
When multiple indicators line up – begin planning your exit strategically so you control the next move.
Because being blindsided?
Totally avoidable – if you’re paying attention.
